  24. I've used a few different VPN clients from home to connect to work and
  25. customer sites.  One thing that they have in common is that I have to
  26. invoke the VPN client in order to make a connection to a particular host.

  28. The other style of VPN involves putting a VPN-enabled router or firewall
  29. piece of hardware at your location, which quietly handles the VPN
  30. connection for you.

  32. In either case, you can't make a connection to the "protected" host without
  33. the VPN connection.

  35. If you have a VPN client, you should have some icon that lets you know that
  36. it is enabled and connected.  From a cmd prompt, you should do
  37.     ipconfig /all
  38. which should reveal that some of your ip settings are not the same as when
  39. you don't have the VPN client running.  You may have more adapters than you
  40. really have, as the VPN becomes one of the adapters.

  42. You probably can't reach any other computer on your local LAN while you are
  43. connected via VPN.
